Exercise 3: Lighting Filters

Before After

In this exercise, we will use the Render Filter to apply some 3D touchups to figures. In this case, we will be attempting to focus the viewers attention to parts of the images.

1) Load mariandan.jpg  mariandan.jpg is in the 'images' directory
2) From the Filter menu, select the Render option. In this case, we will use the Lens Flare filter. As with most filters, many of the attributes of the filter will be controlled by check boxes, sliders, and numeric values.
3) Move the cross hairs so that they appear at the top of the snorkel. From this location, we'd like to focus the viewer's attention.

You may wish to experiment with the various lens types. Move the brightness control to flare the light from the top of the snorkel. A value about 123% gives a nice effect!

4) Load bullrun.jpg bullrun.jpg is in the 'images' directory
5) From the Filter menu, this time we will play with some Lighting Effects. In photography, lighting of your subject is everything. With Elements, you can make some adjustments to your images to simulate lighting effects.
6) Choose a Soft Omni style. As you look through the popup menu, you will see that there are a large number of styles available. Experiment with each to see what effects are possible.
7) The type of light in use for this effect will be Spotlight. Move and stretch the scope of the lighting effect until the subject is suitably highlighted.
